40. Ithaca Flues Model Grade 7 Boxlock Double
serial #186897, 12ga., 28" Whitworth fluid steel barrels choked modified and a light full with bright excellent bores. Barrels retain about 98% excellent quality later rust blue finish. Barrels feature ivory target beads and light sprays of loose scroll 1 1/2" ahead of the breeches. The frame is a lovely mottled case-hardened gray patina and features excellent quality pre-war floral and foliate scroll with banknote filigree bordering and gold inlaid dogs on point on left and right flat and a gold inlaid passenger pigeon on the frame's belly; a gun this fine would have been engraved by Ithaca master engraver Edward Laytham. The triggers retain about 97% of their original gold wash. The grade 7 checkered English walnut capped pistolgrip buttstock rates excellent as professionally refinished. There is an old cross-bolt repair with inlaid steel diamond escutcheons in the fleur-de-lis's at the stock's cheeks, very close scrutiny reveals remnants of an old crack at the left side of the top tang, it appears to have been about 3/4" long and is stable and appears to have been extremely professionally repaired. The splinter style forend is in excellent as-refinished condition as well and retains its ebony tip insert. It is odd that a gun this fine would not be equipped with ejectors, but this gun is not. There is a gold shield-shaped monogram plate along the toeline neatly engraved "JRD". Lockup appears to be tight. Length of pull to the 3/4" recoil pad is 14 3/4" with drops of 1 5/8" and 2 7/8". The shotgun comes with a modern, quality Winchester aluminum gun case with interior tie down straps. The case is both combination and key lockable, the keys are included as are instructions on setting the combination and the un-used leather luggage tag. Overall an excellent 1909-made extremely rare Ithaca high-grade double, with total production of only 22 during the entire history of the Ithaca Gun Company.
