serial #296, 12ga., 28" barrels with good to near very good bores which show scattered light, and perhaps a few moderate, pits. Barrels are overall a pewter gray patina showing scant damascus twist pattern their full-length also with minor oxidation staining and brown toning. The lockplates on this bar-in-wood conversion are a deep tarnished pewter patina and show light sprays of scroll with borderline filigree, both plates are maker marked "H.Tomes & Co.". The Dangerfield & Co. frame is also a pewter patina with some minor oxidation staining, the water table is marked "Dangerfield & Co./ Patent Applied For.” The long tang triggerguard shows nice, light engraving and is also a pewter gray patina. The straight grip English walnut buttstock rates very near excellent for its age showing near overall minor dings and handling marks and much original varnish with some very nice figure on both sides of the butt, there is a minor drying crack at the front-most leading-edge and a small chip missing from the leading left edge of the stock. The forend is smooth and rates about good with a few old chips, checks and a portion of the wedge escutcheon missing. The locks are non-rebounding and are mechanically functional and the thumb opener spring is very positive. Lockup remains surprisingly tight with only the slightest amount of lateral play detectable. Really a very good example of an early Dangerfield conversion, possibly before his association with Lefever. (34290-2) {ANTIQUE} (500/700) SOLD FOR $1150.00
