serial #162111(A), 44 W.C.F., 20" barrel with a very good bore having some specks of pitting present. This 1884 manufactured carbine is nicely engraved "DECHERT" on the cartridge lifter. The metal surfaces bear a pleasing dark brown patina with a few light dings, some faint specks of older surface rust, and traces of original blue finish in protected areas. The brass cartridge lifter and buttplate's trapdoor show a pleasing light patina. The oil finished straight grip walnut buttstock and forend rate very good to near excellent with a couple light dings and handling marks. This carbine is equipped with an original carbine style rear sight and saddle ring. The right side link assembly is missing but the action seems to function properly. A brief search shows 7 individuals in the Civil War with the last name of Dechert and they all survived the war. Further research may prove interesting. The factory records confirm this configuration but have no mention of the engraved name and show a ship date of December 18, 1884.
