36 Caliber, 30 1/2" octagon barrel with a fine bore. This is a pretty little rifle which has an engraved back action lock and double set triggers. The barrel retains 90% of a lovely reapplied blue finish with spots of very mild freckling visible, mostly towards the middle, and has some mild silvering along the edges and at the muzzle. The breech of the barrel has light scroll engraving and is marked "T.W. TIGNOR" on the top flat. The hammer, lockplate, and top tang are nicely scroll engraved and have an overall dark pewter patina with Tignor's name repeated at the top of the lockplate. The walnut has been lightly sanded at some point and exhibits a few scattered handling marks with some attractive feathering along the top of the comb and a lovely oil finish with sharp points on the checkering. A single 7/8" long, with-the-grain crack is present on the left side running from the breech to the lock screw bolster. The stock is embellished with German silver appointments including a lovely, floral engraved patchbox and finger rest triggerguard; buttplate with engraved sunburst on the top tang, scroll and pineapple finial on the bottom; and a standing dog inlay on the rounded cheekpiece. Additionally, the stock has German silver escutcheons at the barrel wedge, German silver forend cap, tailpipe, and two thimbles (the middle thimble has been reattached), while the ramrod is a modern replacement. According to Gardner, Tignor operated his shop in Richmond, VA from 1858 to 1875. This example of his work is in very good-fine condition and would make a nice addition to a collection.
