US Civil War General Staff Kepi

This kepi has a dark blue doeskin wool crown which measures 3" high at the front and has an embroidered bullion U.S. and wreath staff emblem with tarred leather peak and chinstrap with gilt eagle side buttons. The cloth has only a single spot of mothing visible on the top disk and is otherwise in excellent condition with a few scattered small areas where the nap has been lost. The tarred leather is in fine shape with a few small spots of heat damage on the top and more moderate "melting" on the underside. The interior of the kepi has a 1 1/4" wide comfort band and a black silk lining with embossed maker's mark on the underside of the top disk: "ST. NICHOLAS HOTEL/(picture of a building)/No.519(star)B'WAY/NEW YORK/WARNOCK & Co." The band is in fine condition with the exception of a single, small break on the right rear of the cap. The lining is intact and the embossed marking shows traces of gilding remaining with the balance having turned a dull green color. This is a fabulous kepi, one of the finest staff officer's kepis we have yet seen, in excellent overall conditon. (2145-8) (4000/6000) SOLD FOR $5175.00
