440 Caliber, 25" part round part octagon barrel with an excellent bore. This is a beautiful rifle which has 85-90% original blue, turning plum on the barrel under a flaked protective coating of old varnish and with silvering at the muzzle as well as along the exposed edges. The top left flat is marked "J. HARDING/LOWELL, MASS./CAST STEEL". The front sight is mated to both the original elevation adjustable rear sight as well as a period aperture sight, adjustable for both windage and elevation. The lightly engraved hammer and back action lock plate have a slightly mottled gray patina. The lightly figured walnut stock has an added oil finish over a few minor handling marks and is complemented by a pewter forend cap, decorative German silver wedge escutcheons, triggerguard, sideplate, oval stock inlay, engraved buttplate, and ornate patchbox. The period ramrod has a worm on the opposite end and is held by a single iron thimble. A single set trigger completes the package. This is a fine, New England made “buggy” rifle and rates fine condition overall. Truly a lovely gun. (2164-8) {ANTIQUE} (1500/2500)
