.79 caliber, 42" round barrel. The lockplate is marked with a crown ahead of cock, most of which is obliterated by pitting and is marked in vertical arch to rear of cock "WILETTS". The barrel bears two proofs and is marked "BW", a mark that is also found on the inside of the lockplate. The barrel bears a deep brown patina with old scattered light surface oxidation present. The lock was partially cleaned and is mostly gray-brown now with some pitting on front of cock and on lockplate ahead of cock. The touchole is worn open and is original, the pan shows similar erosion leading us to the conclusion that this musket is in original flintlock. The frizzen only, appears to be a replacement. The walnut stock rates very good having been professionally refinished and showing a repaired crack under forearm and a neat repair with inlaid piece of walnut at tailipipe. The stock edges are lightly softened. The brass furniture is generally typical second style Brown Bess except the triggerguard measures only 9 1/2" and there is no wrist escutcheon. Top tang of buttplate is marked with the rack number "D / 11". All brass furniture bears a mellow patina. The sling swivels are proper style but appear to be 20th-century replacements. An affordable and quite handsome second model Brown Bess in original flint. (1948-1) {ANTIQUE} (2500/4000) SOLD FOR $2185.00
