This is a wooden level which consists of a 23 3/4" bar which terminates in a circular quadrant graduated from 10 degrees declination to 95 degrees elevation. The wooden bar would have been inserted into the muzzle and there is a small hole at the start of the zero line for attaching a cord and plumb bob which would have given the elevation (crucial information for the bombardment of a fixed, fortified position). The oil finished walnut is in overall fine shape with some minor handling marks scattered here and there and does show a few minor drying cracks on the quadrant portion. The base of the wooden bar has a small sliding brass cover which still contains an original lead plummet. This is a neat piece of Civil War artillery equipment in fine condition overall.
