serial #3314, .44-77, 34" full octagon barrel with an excellent bore. Major Fulton was an early long-range target shooter who is perhaps best remembered for his performance at the first Creedmoor matches in 1874 where he shot 36 bull's-eyes and 9 centers in 45 total shots giving him a score of 171 out of the possible 180. It was his performance that helped the Americans win that first match. It is very possible, perhaps likely, that this was the rifle he used at that match and that he is illustrated with in early Remington advertisements. The barrel retains about 70% evenly thinning original blue finish. The action retains about 70% original case color which has softened over time and shows a little scattered light surface oxidation. Fire blue on trigger, hammer and breechblock remains strong. The rifle is equipped with what looks to be a modern windgauge front sight with spirit level and its original long-range vernier tang peep sight. The checkered walnut pistol grip buttstock and forend rate very good plus to excellent with about 85% original finish remaining and just normal light handling marks. This rifle was given to C. W. Rowland by Major Fulton around 1900 and along with his three favorite Schuetzen rifles, this rifle remained with Rowland until his death in 1936. This rifle was purchased by Ray Day from Trudi Rowland with the three Rowland Schuetzen rifles on November 25, 1986. A note from Trudi Rowland reads "Ray Day received the C. W. Rowland Schuetzen rifles Major Henry Fulton long-range rifle and all equipment on November 25, 1986. Mr. Day paid cash for the entire stock. Trudi Rowland". Included with the rifle are numerous cases, breech seating tool, re-de-capper, and reloading dies and Ray Day's pocket notebook for the rifle containing his loading data. Also a photograph is included showing the rifle sitting in Mr. Rowlands shooting bench. A rare and historic Remington long-range Creedmoor rifle. {Provenance: C.W.
