serial #32, .52 caliber Flint, 41" heavy octagon target barrel, with false muzzle, with a bright excellent bore. Barrel retains about 98% original blue and is marked "E.F. Herman 32" likely for the late Elmer Herman muzzleloading barrel guru from Pasadena. The generous benchrest style stock appears to be California walnut (although it may just as well be Maple), it features a generous right side rollover cheekpiece. The lock is an original Tower marked 1835 musket lock, the frizzen shows a relining, lock is a nice mottled casehardened gray. Stock shows numerous oakleaf and star inlays with a very fancy sideplate on the left stock flat. The right side of the butt shows an inlaid squirrel with an acorn and oak leaves, there is light incise carving overall. The front has been drilled and tapped for a steel target block, the tang is fitted with a micrometer sight base, no sights are present. The dual set trigger must be "set" for the hammer to cock. Trigger guard is solid brass and is rather ornate. The gun comes with a photocopy of a February 1965 article from "The Firing Line" magazine of the California Rifle and Pistol Association. In the magazine there is an article which features a photograph of Ray Day holding the rifle and showing the then, new state and national record-holding target that he had just shot with the gun. This would be loads of fun to shoot long-range with from the bench This is a long and heavy gun weighing and 31 pounds overall.
