Massachusetts State Militia Hat

Click on images for enlarged versions.

This is an early 19th century brushed beaver round hat (very similar to a top hat) which has an upturned brim on the left side secured by a black and white silk rosette with central brass Massachusetts button, and a very large metal sunburst front plate with "MS/VOLS" in embossed metal letters. The silk rosette is slightly tattered but has an intact bullion center with tassel while the front plate has a dark, nearly black patina topped by a flamboyant ostrich feather plume. The beaver fur has become rather threadbare over the years and the underlying fabric is visible throughout, especially on the top of the crown. The black silk edge trimming of the brim is also quite tattered and the fabric lining of the brim is only about 40-50% present. The interior of the hat as a flaked but intact comfort band and complete blue waxed cloth lining. This hat is somewhat similar to those worn by the British Royal Marines of the period and rates good-very good condition overall. (2017-3) (1000/2000) SOLD FOR $805.00
