Engraved Marlin Ballard No. 6 Schuetzen Rifle

serial #16178, .32-40, 31 1/2" heavy octagon barrel by A. W. Peterson of Denver. Top left flat of barrel is marked "A. W. PETERSON DENVER, COLO." and the bore rates excellent. This rifle features lovely period custom stocks in the distinctive style of Henry Berg of Davenport Iowa. The action features lovely factory relief scroll engraving with standing elk in panel left and standing bear in panel right. The barrel retains a pleasing mix of original brown finish and smooth patina and is fitted with a nice quality modern windgauge front sight with spirit level, rear slot filled with blank and scope blocks are present supporting a Lyman Jr. Targetspot 10 power telescopic sight. The action is fitted with a proper midrange vernier tang peep sight and retains about 75% of its original case color which has softened over time. The checkered walnut stocks feature graceful cheekpiece with double shadow lines, large upswept nickel plated Schuetzen buttplate and horn tipped forend with round palm rest mounted on lovely quality nickel plated base. The condition of the stocks is excellent with most of their original finish remaining, there are two cracks at rear of action protruding approximately 1 1/2" into stock, one on either side. The buttstock and forend have lovely raised carved borders where they meet the action. Rifle comes with a bullet lubricating tool as well as a breech seating tool. Henry Berg was born in Germany in 1827 and immigrated to the United States in 1850. He settled in Davenport Iowa in 1852 where he worked as a gunsmith and dealer in guns and sporting equipment. He played an active role in the organizing of the Davenport Shooting Association, held the office of president of that organization in 1875 was crowned "Schuetzen King".
