This is a knees up, lightly tinted image of two dark haired Federal soldiers standing at attention with weapons and equipment. Both are wearing 4-button enlisted sack coats, Model 1858 forage caps, oval "U.S." waist belts with cap boxes and bayonet scabbards, and .58 caliber cartridge boxes with shoulder belts and eagle plates. Shiny new Model 1861 or 1863 rifle-muskets with fixed bayonets and leather slings are at their sides and the bearded soldier is also wearing a tarred cloth haversack and neckerchief. Brass insignia can be seen on both men's caps and the letters "NHV" can just barely be made out under the Infantry Horns. The image is crisp and clear without any cracks or blemishes on the glass plate and the embossed foil border is excellent. The plate is housed in an intact gutta-percha, Littlefield, Parsons & Co., case which has very elaborate floral scroll borders and central patriotic motif which has an American eagle with riband flanked by cannons, muskets, and flags. This is a fabulous Civil War image in an impressive and well cared for case. (2017-8) (700/900)
