Important US Naval Martial Cannon Priming Flask

Click on images for enlarged versions.

This all copper flask features a rolled rim and two hangers with lead soldered spout. The funnel shows clear evidence of where a mechanical cut off and spring were once located, they have been removed, but wear marks can still be seen from the spring and the square area where the base was soldered is plainly evident. Body itself is 8"long and about 5 1/2" wide. The flask is not marked "GNY" and could therefore be one of the pattern flasks ordered by the U.S. Naval commission of February 1842, or possibly one of the flasks actually ordered and merely not marked for whatever reason. The flask is overall a very nice deep brown patina with two moderate dents and a number of smaller dents on one face, the reverse face shows one moderate to heavy dent. Overall a very fine example of these copper flasks which were designed to replace the horn flasks for priming cannon aboard U.S. "Men of War". [Ref. Riling #868]. (2093-1) (300/500) SOLD FOR $201.25
