Jenks Percussion Muzzleloading Carbine

Click on images for enlarged versions.

58 caliber, 24" barrel fastened by two flat brass bands and having a smoothbore that rates about very good with pitting present. This early percussion muzzleloading carbine is very similar in design to the later manufactured breech loading versions using the mule ear type hammer. The barrel and lockplate assembly have been cleaned sometime ago and bear a gunmetal gray color with light dings and scattered spots of pitting heaviest around the breech section. This carbine has no visible markings except for a crisp "P" at the breech end of the barrel. The brass furniture has a pleasing light patina overall. The lightly sanded and nicely refinished full length walnut stock rates very good with a short crack on the left side above the lockplate mounting screw. The trumpet shaped ramrod may be a modern made replacement. These carbines are referenced on page #19 of a small book by Andrew F. Lustyik titled "Civil War Carbines From Service to Sentiment".
