W.D. Hilliard Under Hammer Buggy Rifle

serial #1660, .38 caliber percussion, 23" barrel with a very good plus bore showing only some minor pitting. The barrel retains a nice smooth plum-gray color, the gun is maker marked "D. H. Hilliard/Cornish/New Hampshire/1660" on the left barrel flat. The barrel is equipped with a nice globe front sight, and an adjustable sporting rear sight, but also with an extended aperature sight which is also adjustable for windage and elevation. There is a coarse adjustment which actuates on grooves cut in the extended tang, additionally the aperture itself screws up and down. The stock is a nice grade of curly maple and rates excellent as refinished, the brass trigger plate underneath shows a mild polishing and has a pleasing appearance. The iron trigger guard is a nice plum-color and features a single finger rest. The gun is equipped with a nice German silver patchbox on the right side of the butt. The brass Crescent style buttplate shows an old polishing as well. The nipple is protected by a brass flash cup. What appears to be the original ramrod is mounted in three thimbles beneath the barrel. Mechanically functional. This is a lovely little buggy rifle made by a well-known New Hampshire maker.
