Winchester Model 1895 US Trials Bayonet and Scabbard

Click on images for enlarged versions.

This bayonet measures 12 3/4" overall with an 8 1/4" single edged blade having single, stopped fullers. This is one of about 100 bayonets made up for trials in the Philippines and is almost identical to the Short Model 1895 Russian bayonet except for the depth of the lug mortise in the pommel (the two are not interchangeable). The blade has a dark gray patina with even freckling along its entire length and has some small areas of light pitting on the back edge. The hilt is marked, "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." on the guard and has rivet secured wooden grip panels which end in a bird's head pommel with press stud. The metal on the reverse side has patches of dark, pinprick pitting where the metal has been in contact with the scabbard's leather belt loop. The scabbard itself is in very good plus condition with lightly flaked but intact leather and smooth, plum-brown metal throat and tip. This is a very rare American bayonet in very good plus condition. (1958-160) (1200/1800)
