US Model 1861 German Made Contract Musket

Click on images for enlarged versions.

58 Caliber, 40" barrel with a fine, bright bore having some mild frosting near the muzzle. This is a German contract musket, one of only a few hundred made at Suhl by C.H. Funk, and has a generally bright, cleaned patina with pinprick pitting throughout and some spots of light surface rust along the barrel. There is heavier pitting on the bolster and on the buttplate. The lock has the distinctive German version of the American eagle, "U.S." at the forward portion of the plate, and an "1861" date behind the hammer. The stock is a maple-like wood which has an added, somewhat glossy, varnished finish over minor handling marks and blemishes. The ramrod is a slightly too long replacement. This is one of the rarest 1861 Contract Muskets and rates good condition overall. (1958-12) {ANTIQUE} (1000/1500) SOLD FOR $1610.00
