serial #177767 .45 ACP/Rim 5 1/2" barrel with a very good bore showing only very minor pitting. Originally a service model revolver, leftover postwar; this gun shows nice quality if slightly simplistic foliate and scroll engraving after which it was silver plated. It has a decidedly Mexican or western appearance, the included factory letter shows shipment to Louisville, KY in 1924. Upon close inspection one can see its butt has a plugged lanyard ring, the frame is marked with "eaglehead/S2" inspectors mark, and barrel is marked with capital "S" of Colonel Gilbert H. Stewart, U.S. inspector. The frame however is stamped with the Smith & Wesson logo, indicating a commercial gun. Revolver retains about 98% of its silver plate, there being some evidence of old light pitting underneath, likely prior to the engraving and refinish. Case color on the hammer and trigger is vibrant and was likely redone at the time of the plating. Gun wears a nice set of Ivory grips, the left panel being smooth, right showing a carved steers head. Revolver was shipped to Belknap Hardware in Louisvile. Only about 1200 commercial models revolvers were produced. (2041-1) {C&R} (1200/1800)
