E. Paton and Sons Under Lever Back Action Eight Bore Hammer Double

Click on images for enlarged versions.

serial #3008, 8 ga., 33" barrels, choke bored, with mostly bright, near excellent bores showing only some very minor pitting 6" and 8" ahead of the chambers, in each bore.  Barrels are a mix of nice Damascus pattern and fading gray-brown, also with sparse very minor oxidation staining.  The barrel rib is marked "E. Paton and Son London Perth & Inverness".  Frame shows scant traces of original casecolors-perhaps 15%- and is mostly a deep pewter gray patina mixing with a speckled brown patina.  The lockplates are maker marked and are also a pleasing mottled pewter patina.  Hammers show some very minor engraving.  There is a minor wrinkle in the trigger guard which could easily be flattened.  The massive English walnut buttstock rates near excellent showing an old repaired break through the wrist at the rear of the tang and both lockplates.  There is a round silver monogram plate along the toeline.  The original recoil pad has hardened and should be replaced.  The splinter style forend is near overall checkered and rates about excellent with one minor chip missing and one minor crack starting at the forend takedown latch.  Hammers are rebounding style, locks are crisp and seem to function well.  For some reason "Not for Ball" has been struck from the bottom of the barrel flats.  Gun still locks up tight, the stock repair seems sound. Overall a quality made big bore shotgun from what seems to be an obscure maker.  (2027-95) {ANTIQUE} [Stan Terhune Collection] (2000/4000) SOLD FOR $4025.00
