58 Caliber, 33" barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore. This is an 1853 dated rifle that has been up-calibered and has what appears to be an incomplete alteration to accept a bayonet visible at the muzzle: the front sight has been milled flush with the barrel and a vertical slot has been cut into the right side of the barrel, about 4 1/2" back from the muzzle. The barrel is mostly bright gray with spots of brown freckling widely scattered throughout and a single patch of dark pitting on the left side, just behind the muzzlecap, and further dark pitting around the nipple and bolster. The breech markings, though faint, are still legible. The stock has been lightly sanded and has a nice military oil finish over numerous minor handling marks, mostly on the underside of the forend. The brass furniture has a dull yellow patina overall and which darkens slightly on the triggerguard. This is an about very good Harpers Ferry made rifle overall. (1958-58) {ANTIQUE} (1500/2500)
