58 Caliber, 33" barrel with a dark bore. This rifle has been altered to accept a socket bayonet with 2 3/4" turned down at the muzzle and a lug added to the underside of of the barrel. Interestingly, there is no front sight added to replace the original which was lost to the reduction. The barrel itself has a smooth brown patina with some subtle mottling visible along the center portion and is marked, "U.S./JCB/V/P" at the breech and a large "N.J." on the left side flat ahead of the "STEEL" marking. The lock is marked, "E. WHITNEY/U.S." ahead of the hammer, "N. HAVEN/1851" behind. The stock has not been sanded and has a thick, added oil finish over numerous small handling marks and blemishes. There is a crisp "NJ" cartouche on the left side, opposite the lock, and two inspector cartouches behind. The brass furniture has acquired a mellow, yellow-ocher patina, slightly brighter on the bands. This is a very good, state marked Mississippi overall. (1958-57) {ANTIQUE} (1500/2500) SOLD FOR $2185.00
