58 Caliber, 33" barrel with a fair bore having strong rifling and even, overall frosting.  This rifle has the New York socket bayonet alteration (Grosz Alteration) and has 2 1/8" of the muzzle turned down with a lug added to the bottom.  A round brass front sight blade, added when the rifle was altered, is present just behind the reduction.  The barrel itself has a gray-brown patina with pitting visible at the breech around the bolster and nipple, while the mottled gray lock is marked, "REMINGTON'S/HERKIMER/N.Y." ahead of the hammer, "U.S./1849" behind.  The stock has a lovely military oil finish over some light handling marks and a still visible cartouche is present on the left side behind the side plate.  The brass furniture is in fine shape and has a mellow yellow-ochre patina.  This is a very good plus New York altered Mississippi Rifle, one of 1600 Remington made rifles altered by F.H. Grosz of New York City in 1861.  (1958-52) {ANTIQUE}  (1500/2500) SOLD FOR $1840.00
