serial #3174, 50 caliber percussion, 21 5/8" part round part octagon barrel with a minty bore. This is a very nice Smith. The barrel retains about 95% original blue finish with the balance bearing a pleasing dark brown patina that blends well. The triggerguard and locking bar retain 99% strong original blue finish. The frame retains 95% original case colors which have softened slightly and showing loss on the hammer and near the nipple bolster. The walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent with strong cartouches and a few scattered dings. The Springfield Research records show Smith carbines on both sides of this serial number going to Co.
