This is a dark blue wool cap with treated leather bill and chinstrap with sheet brass slider. The wool is in very good shape and exhibits some light wear scattered about the crown as well as a period repair to a 1" X 1 1/2" hole at the front. The bill and chinstrap have some light, overall crackling, heaviest on the underside of the bill, and the strap is secured by two, fairly bright, brass cavalry eagle buttons. The interior has an intact leather comfort band (restitched along the back) with a brown polished cotton lining and also has the original, intact maker's label which reads, "GEO. HOFF & CO./PHILADA./No.3=7". The George Hoff company received contracts for over 600,000 forage caps during the war (temporarily saving the company from bankruptcy), and was out of business not long after the cessation of hostilities. This is a lovely, maker marked cap which rates very good plus condition overall. (2072-1) (2000/3000) SOLD FOR $2587.50
