58 Caliber, 38" barrel with a pitted bore. This is a rare musket which has an overall dark brown patina on the metal with some minor pitting around the bolster and nipple. The lockplate has clear "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" and "1858" markings with a crisp eagle on the tape primer door. The breech of the barrel has a partially visible date on the top flat and a deeply struck five pointed star on the left side. The stock has a somewhat glossy, varnish finish over numerous small handling marks and blemishes, heaviest along the ramrod channel and on the left side of the stock. The star mark at the breech is the Richmond Armory third reinspection stamp and shows probable Confederate usage in addition to the intrinsic rarity of this model in its own right. This particular example rates very good overall. (1958-85) {ANTIQUE} (2500/3500) SOLD FOR $2530.00
