This is a non-beaded helmet which retains 95% plus of its original brown painted finish and has seven hole ventilation grommets on the sides of the crown. A 95% complete party eagle decal is present on the left side, an 80% complete SA rune decal is present on the right. The cloth suspension web is intact and marked with the owner's name and unit, "Johannes 12/30". The original translucent celluloid chinstrap, which is somewhat stiff but intact is included. The SA-Wehrmannschaften was a sub-unit of the SA which trained its members for service within the Wehrmacht and by 1944 was also responsible for allocating men into Home Guard Anti-aircraft Units (Heimatflak) and the Auxiliary Police (Stadtwacht and Landwacht). This particular helmet was captured by Mr. Amerigo Bergamo, then a soldier in the 101st Inf. Regt., 26th Inf. Div. U.S. Army, some time around December 10, 1944, in the area of Metz. He relates in an accompanying notarized letter: "The 101st Regimental Command Post was established in Schlier Kaserne which was a barracks of the German Officer Candidate School located in Metz and it was here where I came across this helmet." This is one of the rarest wartime German helmets and is in excellent and complete condition with only a few small surface scuffs. (1985-3) (3,000/5,000) SOLD FOR $4600.00
