serial #265, 58 Caliber, 33" barrel with a very good, lightly frosted bore. This up-calibered rifle has been altered to accept a socket bayonet and has had the muzzle turned down for 2 3/4" with a bayonet stud on the bottom and a brass front sight added just behind the turn-down. The barrel has a dark plum-brown patina throughout with some light pitting around the nipple. The lock also has a dark patina with underlying gray peeking through, and the plate is marked "TRYON/U.S." just ahead of the hammer, "PHILADA/PA/1848" at the rear. The stock has a somewhat glossy varnished finish added over light handling marks while the brass fittings having a pale yellow patina and a name, "N H Buell's", scratched onto the patchbox cover. Napoleon H. Buell was 18 when he mustered into Co. D, 132nd N.Y. Infantry on October 4, 1862. Buell was discharged for disability on April 24 of the following year but re-entered service on January 25, 1864 mustering into Co. L, 6th N.Y. Cavalry. He served with the 6th until it was combined with surviving elements of the 15th N.Y. Cavalry and became the 2nd N.Y. Provisional Cavalry Regiment on June 17, 1865, and was finally mustered out at Louisville, KY on August 9. Included with the rifle is a folder containing copies of Buell's muster sheets, discharge for disability form, re-enlistment form, and regimental histories. This is a very good plus Mississippi Rifle which has a tie to a specific Civil War soldier. (1958-89) {ANTIQUE} (2500/3500) SOLD FOR $4025.00
