Whitworth Three Band Volunteer Rifle

Click on images for enlarged versions.

.45 caliber Whitworth percussion, 33" barrel with an about excellent Whitworth rifled bore. Metal surfaces on this rare rifle are an overall pewter gray and deep gray patina, nearly all metal surfaces show light pinprick pitting. The lockplate and hammer are a bit more smooth, and are maker marked, with "crown over W" at rear of lockplate. The English walnut stock rates excellent, showing a good deal of original varnish, very good checkering, crisp edges and the minor dings and dents one would expect from use. There is a flash protector in place under the nipple. The makers marking on the barrel is present but barely visible. The included brass ramrod is a marbles three-piece offering, the rammer is a hexagonal Whitworth tip. A period brass front sight protector is included as well as a modern 1 1/4" leather rifle sling. While the metal is slightly lacking in the condition department, this is still a very rare rifle with an unquestioned reputation for accuracy. This is a very good example overall.
