serial #876, .56 caliber percussion, 31 3/16" barrel with a good bore showing evident rifling but minor pitting its full length. The metal surfaces on this large bore military contract musket show a nice smooth plumb brown patina on barrel while frame shows a gray and brown patina with overall very light pitting and numerous minor impact marks. All numbers appear to match. Rear sight is marked for 100, 300 and 600 yards. Cylinder arbor and cylinder show "G" inspectors mark while numerous other parts show "K" inspectors mark. The full-length forend and buttstock rate very good showing numerous minor dings and dents that one would expect from use afield. There is a very minor chip to the right-hand side of the tang above the faintly evident cartouche. The "U.S." marking on the tang is very good as well "K Nov.24 1857" can be made out. The original cleaning rod is present, as well as the brass extension inside the butt's trapdoor. Mechanically the gun cocks, times and locks up well, the face of the hammer shows minor peening. Rear barrel band is slightly loose. On the left side of the butt a period carving shows the initials "SB". Overall a very nice example that is all matching, mostly smooth, with honest uncleaned wood.
