serial #157962, .45 3 1/4", 30 3/8" heavy octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rifle was originally shipped to Dechaume & Dunn in Houston as a long-range number 2 rifle which weighed 10 pounds. Sharps records also indicate that this rifle shipped later to J.P. Lower as an 18 pound sporter. The rifle does indeed weigh 18 pounds, however the barrel shows neither a Sharps address, serial number or a J.P. Lower marking. The barrel retains an even blue brown patina overall with scattered light surface oxidation present. The action and lock are a pleasing mix of gray brown patina and faded original case color. The checkered pistol grip walnut stock rates very good with a good deal of finish remaining but showing moderate wear to checkering. The forend matches the buttstock nicely in finish, color and fit and we feel it is original to the rifle. We know this rifle is in the same configuration it was when it shipped to J.P. Lower, the lack of markings is somewhat puzzling. The rifle has obviously been in this configuration for many years, we wonder if as a re-barrel it could've been shipped like this. The rifle is equipped with a later windgauge front sight with spirit level and still wears a long-range tang peep sight in original base numbered to the gun. An intriguing western shipped heavy Sharps buffalo rifle. (1915-10) {ANTIQUE} [Ray Day Collection] (5000/10,000) SOLD FOR $6325.00
