serial #C,53089, 44 2 1/4", 30" medium weight octagon barrel with a bright shiny bore. In addition to the standard factory markings, top of barrel is additionally marked "J.P. LOWER" and the accompanying factory letter confirms that the rifle was indeed shipped to John P. Lower in Denver on July 7, 1876. The rifle was shipped as a 44 2 1/4" with double set triggers, knife blade front sight and tang peep sight. The rifle weighed 12 lbs. 10 oz. and had an extra charge of 5 dollars for extra stock and finish; the total list price was $52. The barrel retains 95% lovely old blue finish that we feel is likely original although we cannot definitively make that claim. The action and lock retain 95% strong original case color. The pewter tipped forend rates excellent but does have a very thin gap where it meets action. The buttstock is a military rifle buttstock which has been nicely lightly refinished still showing two original cartouches as well as the "DFC" in banner, center left side of butt. The patchbox and buttplate retain most of their original color casehardened finish. The front sight is currently a windgauge with spirit level, the rear sight is the original R. S. Lawrence marked sight and the rifle is equipped with an excellent quality reproduction long-range vernier tang peep sight. A handsome Western shipped Sharps buffalo rifle.
