William Evans Underlever Double Hammer Rifle

serial #5517, 400/360, 26 1/8" barrels with bright excellent bores. This rifle features simple geometric border engraving and has rebounding hammers. Each back action lock is engraved "WILLIAM EVANS" and the tops of barrels are engraved "WILLIAM EVANS FROM PURDEY'S" on left and "63 PALL MALL ST. JAMES'S LONDON" on right. Loading information is also engraved on tops of barrels "400/360 2 3/4" SOLID METAL CASE" on left and "40 GRS. CORDITE POWDER 300 GRS. SOFT NOSE NICKEL BULLET". The barrels feature a low-profile beaded blade front sight along with a single standing and two folding leaf rear sight graduated from 100 to 300 yards. The barrels retain 75% old restored black finish with a couple patches of scattered light pitting present. The action and locks retain about 50% original color case hardened finish which has mostly faded to a smoky German silver color. The checkered pistol grip buttstock and splinter forend rate near excellent with about 90% original oil finish remaining and showing scattered light surface marks. Buttstock features a nice shadowline cheekpiece and a checkered butt. All checkering remains quite sharp with just a little light wear. Top of action and rib extension are stippled for reduced glare. Rifle is equipped with original sling swivels and boasts a 14 7/8" length of pull. Overall a good solid and quite honest double rifle by this well-known London firm.
