serial #2428, 303 British, 24 5/8" nitro proofed barrels with bright excellent bores. This rifle features MacNaughton's own round action which features hammer springs mounted on the triggerplate much like Dickson guns and the wonderful guns made today by David Mckay Brown. The action of his rifle features lovely tight English scroll engraving with "MacNaughton" engraved in riband on left fence and "Edinburgh" on right fence. Both top and bottom tangs along with opening lever and triggerguard feature full coverage fine scroll engraving. The top of the barrels are engraved on rib at breech "JAMES MCNAUGHTON / 26 HANOVER ST / EDINBURGH & PERTH" and also "PATENT / No. 12464 /1899". The barrels feature reinforced breeches which step down to handsome tapered steel barrels. The condition of the rifle is very fine with the barrels retaining 97% excellent quality black finish which may well be original. The action retains 75% original color casehardened finish, vivid in protected areas and faded to a German silver color in more exposed areas. Rifle is equipped with an interesting toggle safety which pivots left and right and has nice single standing and four folding leaf express sights graduated from 100 to 500 yards, folding leafs are all nicely scroll engraved. The checkered round knob pistol grip buttstock and splinter forend are of highly figured English walnut and rate excellent plus retaining virtually all of their superb quality restored oil finish. Checkering remains sharp and crisp including the checkered butt. Rifle weighs 8 lbs. 7 oz. and points nicely with a 14 1/2" pull over checkered butt. Rifle comes in an old oak and leather trunk style case with a later paper McNaughton label. The rifle fits well in the case but the case is likely not original to this gun. A splendid little Scottish round action double rifle. (2045-4) {C&R} (12,000/18,000) SOLD FOR $25875.00
