serial #25341, 32-40, 30" octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. Top of barrel is marked "H. M. POPE. HARTFORD, CONN." and bottom of barrel is marked with Pope's number "259". This is a very handsome Winchester rifle. The barrel has no rear seat, is free of any extra holes and retains 98% original blue finish. The action retains about 95% brilliant original case color. The plain forend retains about 90% original finish and is fitted with a nice quality custom period palm rest. The checkered pistol grip buttstock is of beautifully figured walnut and has large shadowline cheekpiece and nickel plated Swiss buttplate. The rifle is equipped with a windgauge front and midrange vernier tang peep sights. A single set trigger is also in place. Factory records indicate that this rifle originally shipped as a 40-70, 30" octagon No. 3 weight barrel, plain trigger and plain pistol grip. The buttstock and trigger appear to be original Winchester products added to the rifle probably at time of Pope's rebarreling. The false muzzle is no longer present. Accessories included a Pope mold and bullet lubricating pump as well as some cast bullets and empty cases. This is a lovely and very attractive antique Pope High Wall rifle.
