serial #23593, 12 bore, 27" barrels with bright excellent bores. Barrels have an inside diameter of .730" with choke constrictions of .012" and .029". The shotgun is proofed for 1 1/8 ounce load 2 1/2", current chamber length is 2 3/4". This is a wonderful 1928 production Purdey shotgun. The locks and action feature beautiful fine English rose & scroll engraving. Shotgun features an assisted opening system, ejectors, cocking indicators and automatic safety. The condition of shotgun is wonderful with the barrels retaining 95% evenly thinning original blue finish with one light scratch on left tube just ahead of standing breech. The action and locks retain over 90% strong original color case hardened finish with area of loss being primarily on forward belly of action. The triggerguard and opening lever retain 98% bright original blue finish. The checkered English walnut straight grip buttstock and forend feature lovely figure and rate excellent with over 90% of their original oil finish and with good solid checkering that shows just the lightest wear. Shotgun features a 14 1/4" pull over a thin solid rubber pad and has drops of 1 3/8" and 1 3/4". Silver escutcheon plate on bottom of stock is engraved "L. C. PHIPPS". Lawrence C. Phipps (1862-1958) was a very wealthy businessman whose business career was with the Carnegie Steel Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He rose to the position of vice president and treasurer of the Carnegie steel company and held that position when the company was bought out by U.S. Steel. Phipps later left the company and moved to Denver, Colorado as a multimillionaire in his mid-30s. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1918 and won reelection in 1924. The Phipps family remains a very prominent family in the Denver area to this day. This is a lovely quality, beautifully handling shotgun built by one of the world's finest makers for a prominent American businessman, politician and philanthropist.
