.34 caliber on .32-40 case, 28 5/8" No. 4 weight octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. Mr. Day's notes state that this rifle once belonged to Los Angeles gunsmith Gus Pachmayr and that he and friends sometimes shot reduced round ball loads with it in the alley behind his shop. The rifle is fitted with a nice quality German style Schuetzen buttstock with large scooped cheekpiece as well as a large Germanic style finger loop lever and adjustable double set triggers. The forend appears to be an original Winchester product and has had a nice quality custom palm rest added. The barrel retains about 70% evenly thinning original blue finish which is blending with a smooth brown patina. The barrel is fitted with scope blocks which hold a Winchester A5 telescopic sight in addition to a windgauge front sight with spirit level; rear slot is filled with blank. The action retains an even and mostly smooth brown patina with a midrange vernier tang peep sight present. The buttstock with brass underhook buttplate rates near excellent as does the forend, both of which appear to have been nicely refinished years ago. Accessories include an Ideal loading tool which is remarked "34.45" along with a "Clerke" marked bullet mold and some other small items. Several targets shot by Ray Day are included along with two small memo pads with loading information recorded by Ray Day and which refer to this gun as the Mr. Gus Pachmayr Winchester High Wall 33-40-.341 diameter. Gus Pachmayr was a very well-regarded custom gunsmith whose name is mentioned among the likes of R.F. Sedgley, Tom Shelhamer, Bob Owens and Griffin & Howe.
